Never discount home advantage. Never discount serve and volley either especially on a super fast hard court.

That is the lesson Novak Djokovic will take away after his shock defeat against Frenchman Michael Llodra in the third round of the Paris Masters tourney.

This is Llodra’s second major upset in recent times. He knocked out Tomas Berdych at the 2010 US Open. This also gives the French a psychological advantage going into the Davis Cup final to be played at Belgrade from December 3 – 5, 2010.

Federer sailed into the quarter-finals beating Radek Stepanek 6-4, 6-3.Federer plays old pal Austrian Jurgen Melzer next. Federer has never progressed beyond the quarter-finals of this premier event but there is a first time for everything, isn’t there? If anyone can break a hoodoo or jinx, it is this man from Basel who keeps rewriting the record books.

Monfils,Berdych, Ferrer and Roddick have booked their places for the season-ending finale—the ATP World Tour finals.

Monfils knocked out a battling Verdasco 6-7 (4/7), 7-6 (7/2), 7-5 and Roddick slaughtered Ernest Gulbis in straight sets 6-3, 7-6 (10/8).

Ferrer is in by default because Melzer’s fate was settled by Verdasco’s loss to Monfils. Berdych too sneaked through—courtesy Verdasco’s loss—despite losing to Russian Nikolay Davydenko.

The other four who make up the final eight are Federer, Nadal, Soderling and Djokovic.

Mahesh Bhupathi and Max Mirnyi have qualified for the London event but the Indo-Pak express of Bopanna and Qureishi had no such luck.

Bhupathi and Mirnyi won their second round match to get through to the quarter-finals of the Paris Masters beating Jonathan Erlich and Michael Kohlmann 3-6, 6-1, 10-5.

Bopanna and Qureishi crashed out in the second round losing 3-6, 2-6 to Mark Knowles and Andy Ram.

Leander Paes and Lukas Dlouhy have already qualified for the London event.

Paes and Bhupathi opted out of the Guangzhou Asian Games 2010 in order to make the World Tour Finals. Participating in the Games would mean letting down their respective partners.

Though the two play doubles together when representing India, they have different partners on the tour.

My way of joking is to tell the truth. It is the funniest joke in the world.George Bernard Shaw
