The sentencing of four medical students to four years of rigorous imprisonment for ragging their junior Aman Kachroo to death has struck a chord across the country.
The first year medical student was beaten to death by his four seniors—Ajay Verma, Naveen Verma, Abhinav Verma and Mukul Sharma.
Though ragging is illegal in the country, the practise is winked at by engineering and medical colleges. The practice which is supposed to be a way for juniors to get to know their seniors has degenerated into bullying and intimidation.
Aman’s father, Rajendra Kachroo, has termed it a “landmark judgement”. He believes that it will serve as a deterrent to ragging in educational institutes across the country.
