The ‘New Americans’

In humor, India, sarcasm, satire on May 30, 2011 at 13:44

There are some who would like to believe that in the new age of a power shift from the Western nations to the East namely India and China, India can claim the mantle of being the ‘new America’.

Though that’s very much in the realm of possibility, being the ‘new America’ is not driving on the right-hand side of the road. Besides the US of A,  162  other countries drive on that side of the road. None of them claim to be the ‘new America’ solely on that basis. In fact, the majority of the world  drives on the right. It is the minority (76) including the UK and India that prefer the left-hand drive—a colonial hangover.

Kindly clean up your doggie-poo when walking your dog. ‘Civil Americans’ are not allowed to do that. They are fined.

Copying Hollywood movie plots in Bollywood, Mollywood and Tollywood does not qualify either.

Ever wondered whom to turn to for those little, niggling, minor complaints or irritants that others tell you are nothing or just to live with it?

After all, that’s life in India. Chalta hai, everything goes!

Well, if you have an internet connection and the time, Complaints India might just be the place for you.

The web-site address is : http://www.complaints-india.com

All you need to do is fill out a form and your grievance will be published on the site.

If you take the trouble to locate the offending party’s e-mail address, your plaint will be forwarded to the (un)concerned party.

If not, the good guys at Complaints India will try and  locate the appropriate address from their database.

The site works on the premise that firms do not want the adverse publicity generated regards  their products and/or services.

Good luck complaining!

Dhoni and Nets Walk Outs

Dhoni walked out of the practice session on Saturday when Karthik was injured on the right thumb by a nasty delivery.

Wonder how soon will it be that touring teams walk out of Test matches where sub-standard pitches have been laid just so to ensure that the home team can find its way back into the series? There are turners and then there are sub-standard ones. Sometimes, they seem to be synonymous.

Is this a bad pitch for Team India?

Have a great day!

Forbes India – Casino Royale: The Story Of Qualcomm

In Management, technology on July 13, 2010 at 16:22

There is something about technology companies that makes them want to dominate the world. Oracle, SAP, Microsoft, IBM, Google and even Apple all want the world to veer around to their point of view and therefore their products. Maybe it is something to with the transient nature of technology advantage. Those who manage to be dominant, even for a short-while, are seen as visionaries. And then there are those who are almost in that camp but not quite. For much of its life Qualcomm has been in the latter camp — the almost-Microsoft.It was founded in 1985 by MIT professor-turned-entrepreneur, Irwin Jacobs, together with six of his friends. They had invented a proprietary technology that became the seed for the wireless standard CDMA, a technique that allows large amounts of information to be transmitted over limited wireless spectrum by using complex matching algorithms.CDMA began to be adopted by the world’s mobile operators from the mid-90s after years of relentless hard-selling by Jacobs, backed up by equally relentless patenting by his engineers in theR&D department.Globally, this strategy has been very successful. Today, the company founded by Jacobs is led by his son Paul, and sits on a pile of over $18 billion in cash while generating another $2-3 billion in free cash flows every year!

Vehicle penetration in India & China

In economics on May 12, 2010 at 17:34

India recently posted its highest ever car sales figure in the decade. China, the world’s largest automotive market, increased its car sales by a third. Yet, both these economies fall abysmally short in terms of comparison of vehicle ownership per 1,000 people. As today’s chart shows, the fastest growing economies like India and China are way behind their Western peers in terms of vehicle penetration. No wonder the carmakers world over are enticed by the opportunity that these markets present.

With the spat between the 2 protagonists of the IPL ‘Twittergate’ now hitting Parliament, i.e. Tharoor’s conduct being questioned by the opposition parties, and with demands for his resignation becoming more strident, my thoughts on Shashi Tharoor and Lalit Modi.

According to global sports salaries review, IPL is the second-highest paid league, based on first-team salaries on a pro-rata basis, second only to the NBA league.

Doosra: The life and times of an Indian student in Australia.

A short story from one of my friends, Roanna Gonsalves, from St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai.

It describes her take on the plight of Indian students in Australia drawing upon her unique personal experience.. But why just Australia? This could be a fable for Indian students anywhere!

Have a great week!

Congratulations, Roanna!
